Fellow Property Owners Around Green Lake:

The Lake Management Committee met September 13 to address several issue.  The most recent activity has been the initial treatment for Eurasian water in Green Lake.

We have received several observations of EWM washing up on shorelines around the lake.  It is our intent to have a survey of the treatment success in the near future.  Plans are in place to continue aggressive management of this species next summer.  Of course, funding of these activities is always an issue.  Grant application has been made to the LCCMR (Legislative-Citizen Commission on Minnesota Resources) to finance the Green Lake Milfoil Containment Pilot Demonstration Project.  We will have no information on the success of this application until late next spring at the earliest.  We cannot count on it to meet all of our needs toward EWM abatement.

Please remember that the GLPOA is now a 501-C non profit organization.  If you are concerned about the changing environmental quality of Green Lake, and would like to invest in its future, you can contribute your tax deductible gift towards the EWM Containment project.  It is our intent to keep you informed of the project and aware of the status of Eurasian watermilfoil in the lake.

Dear Green Lake Lovers -

Green Lake will continue to face serious threats and management challenges in the future!  The likely introduction of more harmful exotic plants, animals and viruses pose serious even deadly threats!  More effective and comprehensive control of Eurasian Water Milfoil is possible, desirable, and does work!  But attending to these will be very critical and require financial underwriting by our members of Green Lake.

Green Lake Property Owners must provide financial support to protect Green Lake, as no one else will!

In it my position, as Executive Secretary of the Green Lake Property Owners Association, that many lakeshore owners are frustrated, sometimes angry with the lack of government initiative or investment.  I hear many comments that "outside boaters" should pay when they come on to Green Lake because they are the ones bringing the exotic species into our beautiful lake.

The answer to the above statement is that neither the users of Green Lake nor the government may be looked at for significant financial support to protect Green Lake at this time.  To the government persons; environmental programs are ranked very low on the priority list when they hear from constituents about schools, health care, social issues and energy problems.

The question which is asked is "what can we do?"  Mostly, please get involved.  This is Civics 101 class.  We ask that you contact your state and local representatives and tell them that the protection of Green Lake is a priority!

The State of Minnesota, DNR Department came out with a regulation of 'dock sizes' this past year.  I do not understand how the size of a dock matters when we have Eurasian water Milfoil within Green Lake.  Effective programs for protection and control of Eurasian Water Milfoil requires funding.  That means "You and Me!"

The Green Lake Property Owners Board of Directors applied to the federal government for a
501 - C, tax deductible gift for the assistance with our programs of Green Lake.  This was approved, and granted, in March of 2006.  Your donation qualifies as a tax deductible donation.

This past year, 2007, we treated Green Lake at a cost of over $7,000.00 to control Eurasian Water Milfoil.  We wish to ask you, Green Lake Property Owners and business persons, to please give a gift to the 501 - C program of Green Lake before this taxable year is completed.

Please join your neighbors in giving a tax deductible gift to the Green Lake Property Owners Association to control Eurasian Water Milfoil for the coming year.  Please mail to the GLPOA, Post Office Box 362, Spicer, MN 56288.

Thank you
