Green Lake Property Owners Association Education Forum
Topic:  Assessments on Lake Property
Green Lake Bible Camp June 11, 2004  7:30 PM

The GLPOA Education Committee has planned an education forum concerning assessments around Green Lake.  Dave Oelslager, Kandiyohi County Assessor, will help residents understand the role of the county assessor and help better understand the assessment process.  Many have wondered how properties are valued, how market values are established, what the “This Old House” exemption is, what are limited market values and how property taxes are determined.  How assessors keep up with the soaring values will also be explained.  All of these questions will be addressed with the hope of greater understanding for residents of Green Lake.  Specific personal questions can be answered at the Assessor’s office.  Coffee and refreshments will be available.  Bring your neighbors.

NEWS FLASH!

Bruce Gilbertson of DNR Concerning Eurasian Water Milfoil

"On July 23, 2002 Jeff Bredberg of Kandiyohi County Environmental Services and I conducted a boat survey of Green Lake and Norway Lake to find areas with EWM, looking especially for matted stands.   The results were encouraging at this time.  We found no EWM at sites identified in the past two years as having abundant growth.  None was found by the swim beach, Spicer boat access, Little Melvin's, Couleur access, or at Little Morgandale resort.  Several native aquatic plant species were identified at each of these sites.  One small stand was found north of the fishing pier in Lion's Park.  It was about 15 feet by 30 feet in size, with some scattered plants surrounding it.  The reason for the sharp decline of EWM in Green Lake is not known.  Because it was not sampled at the various sites does not mean it is not present at all, but probably at very low abundance.  For now, we are not recommending any treatment at the access or swim beach.  Chemical treatment in these areas could create disturbances that would allow EWM to re-establish itself.  There will be continued monitoring for the plant."

Dear Green Lake Property Owner:

I regret to inform you that on July 30 and 31, 2000, plants believed to be Eurasian Watermilfoil were found in Green Lake by an alert property owner. The plants were taken to the DNR and examined by them and then sent to the state office to be examined. The state confirmed that it was Eurasian Watermilfoil.

The state DNR has been out and checked the lake and identified three (3) areas where the milfoil has been found and marked these areas with yellow buoys. These areas are in front of Little Melvins, west of Morgandale Resort, and north of Indian Beach Resort. Please stay out of these areas to prevent the spread of milfoil. Under state statute, it is unlawful to angle, anchor or operate a watercraft in a marked area of Eurasian Watermilfoil.

The GLPOA board has been in contact with the DNR and is seeking their cooperation in the education of users of the lake and the control of the milfoil. Signs telling of the milfoil and the cleaning of boats have been placed at the accesses.

milford2.gif (51684 bytes) Enclosed, you will find an identification card that will help you in checking your shoreline. The Eurasian Watermilfoil is what we should be concerned with. The Northern Watermilfoil is common in most lakes. Please put this card in a place where it will be of use. Your help in identifying the milfoil and the proper cleaning of any watercraft entering or leaving the lake is extremely important.

The Green Lake Property Owners Association Board will be working to preserve the quality of Green Lake and hopefully keep this problem to a minimum. If you find a plant which you are concerned about, please contact Bruce Gilbertson at the DNR office at 796-2161. Please feel free to ask questions or to offer suggestions.

Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.

Sincerely,

Ron Dobbs,
GLPOA President
